Let God and let go – facing the fear of intimacy with God

Most of us want to clutch and hang on – to our control of experiences, of our families, of our ways of operating and to all that we hold dear in life.  Sometimes we even want to cling to what is distasteful in our lives because those things feel safe and familiar to us – even when they are not healthy for our souls.

Letting go or surrender is an important spiritual practice. In fact, if we look at the Christian faith we can see it is a pathway of surrender, of descent not ascent. It is a journey where we die to false ways of living and being in order that we can “discover our true and larger identity in Christ.” (David Benner, Soulful Spirituality)

The thought of surrender and letting go may cause you to be filled with fear. But what if it actually set you on a whole new course in life; one that is as tantalizingly close as the word ‘yes’?

Matthew 16:24-26 The Message (MSG)
24-26 Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?
