The April heat in Mali, West Africa, is furnace-level uncomfortable. By seven o’clock in the morning, cotton shirts are already perspiration-soaked. Shade is coveted. Dogs lie listlessly under trees.

In May, we missionaries would often point our cars south to the mountainous region of Mann in Côte d’Ivoire.

We stayed in rustic cabins, sitting atop termite-proof cement pillars with Biblical names like Nebo and Carmel. The nights were gloriously cool, so much so that we would often snuggle underneath warm duvets. A favourite activity was hiking up to the summit of one of the surrounding mountains. The narrow path led to a panoramic view of the forested valley below.

It had been a few years since we had hiked this pathway, but everyone was on board to venture out. It didn’t take much to convince the kids. At one point on our walk, the path didn’t seem as

clear as I remembered it. I was convinced that we had gone too far. We could see the rock we needed to crest, but it seemed frustratingly inaccessible. Then I spotted some vines. We used these as ropes, hoisting ourselves to foot grips on the rock.

“Are you sure this is the way, Daddy?” my daughter asked. I didn’t want to sound too uncertain, so I simply replied, “I think so, Larissa.”

Once we were all safely atop the rock, marvelling at the beauty of the vista beneath us, Luke happened to look behind us. “Hey, look, Dad. Isn’t that the path we were supposed to follow?” Indeed, it was. If I had just been a bit more patient, we would have been spared the effort of pulling ourselves up on those unwieldy vines.

My kids learned an important lesson that day. Dads don’t always know the way. Fortunately, we have a Saviour who not only knows the way, but who is the way. “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me.” Scrambling up the rock that spring morning in Côte d’Ivoire, we had a goal. We were determined to get to the lookout rock, and even if we took the more difficult path to get there, we did in fact reach our goal. The prophet Jeremiah talks about seeking God. “He will search for me and find me, who searches for me with all his heart.”

On this Father’s Day, the best thing we can do for our children is to model the search. If our kids see that we are engaged in seeking God with our whole heart, they will be so much more likely to join us in that search. Our God loves us in a way that surpasses our understanding. Finding our way to God is the single most important search we will undertake in our lives- and the Way is not hidden to those who seek Him.
